Caution to the Wind is an extraordinary release! The Canadian band The Enforcers has released it on Longshot Music. The anticipation for this release is well-deserved. The band continues to be one of the strongest voices of Oi! and hardcore punk.
This LP follows the band’s Rock Against Society and self-titled LP’s themes of a raw, powerful energy while expanding on the direction of straighter rock’n’roll hooks and melodies that linger long after the needle lifts. It is the kind of record that will have you up, shouting, jumping, and fully experiencing the intensity.
The album is a fast-paced ten-track affair that wastes no time getting to the point. After a sharp, and driving “Prying Eyes,” it jumps unceremoniously into the title track. It is followed by a barrage of “The Game,” stomping “Hate on the Prairie,” “The Gift,” heavier “Ways to Die,” “Outlast,” the already familiar punch of “More Hate Than Fear,” “Fraying Threads,” and the drive of “Buried Alive.”
The Enforcers continue to steer clear of predictable verse-chorus arrangements. The intense, urgent vocals continue to drive everything forward with a definite sense of character and urgency. Tempo changes, sharp guitar breaks, and expanding rock’n’roll hooks keep the whole affair explosive and engaging. Boredom has no place here. It is aggressive Oi!-influenced punk that continues to strike while giving the choruses a chance to get stuck in your head.
Lyrically, the record continues to follow the well-worn path of frustration, defiance, and raw edge. “Hate on the Prairie,” “Ways to Die,” “More Hate Than Fear,” “Fraying Threads,” and “Buried Alive” are all indicative of that. It is not a feel-good kind of record. It is all about undiluted drive and disdain for the wrong circumstances, which the band continues to express with their music.
The album has a matching no-frills approach, being as hard-hitting as the pit and the stereo can take. Some say that this is what real punk (and proper modern Oi!) is all about. This record is precisely what the fans of The Enforcers were hoping for. If you love the band’s previous releases, this one has it all!
