Backfire! - The Last Confession

Some bands stay with you for a lifetime. For me, that band has always been Backfire!. From the first time I heard their raw, uncompromising sound, they became the undisputed godfathers of Eurocore in my eyes — the band that defined what European hardcore could and should be. Thirty-two years after forming in Maastricht, they have now closed the chapter with The Last Confession, a five-track mini-album released on March 20, 2026, via WTF Records. Holding this final release feels like saying goodbye to old friends who shaped who I am.

I still remember the first Backfire! records that hit me in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Their New York-inspired aggression mixed with that unmistakable Dutch intensity created something special — a sound that was both heavy and heartfelt. Through lineup changes, the tragic loss of founding drummer Richard in 1999, and countless tours across Europe and beyond, Backfire! never compromised. They shared stages with legends like Madball, Agnostic Front, and Biohazard, yet always carried the spirit of the underground with pride. That resilience is exactly what you hear on The Last Confession.

The EP wastes no time. It opens with powerful guitar work on “How Strong I Can Be,” immediately pulling me back into that familiar territory of metallic hardcore riffs and unbreakable spirit. Then comes “Means To Your End,” the most urgent track on the record. When the opening shout hits, it feels like classic Backfire! at their absolute peak.

One track that particularly moved me is “Fallen Rebels.” It’s a love letter to the M-Town Rebels scene and carries that anthemic quality that will destroy live venues. As someone who has followed this band for decades, hearing them honor their roots while delivering fresh energy felt deeply personal. The closing tracks, especially “Hate To Break It” and “Shed My Skin,” leave you with a message of perseverance and renewal — classic PMA wrapped in raw, no-nonsense hardcore.

The Last Confession is Backfire! doing what they have always done best: delivering honest, hard-hitting hardcore with heart. For longtime fans like myself, it feels like the perfect ending. For newer listeners, it serves as a powerful introduction to one of the most important bands European hardcore has ever produced.

After all these years, thank you Backfire!. Your music accompanied me through good times and bad, and it will continue to do so long after the last note fades. This one hurts in the best possible way.
