Alright, let's kick this off with the basics: "Lex Talionis" ain't just some fancy title slapped on a record—it's straight-up Latin for the "law of retaliation," that old-school eye-for-an-eye vibe from ancient codes like the Bible or Hammurabi's law. Think vengeance served cold, justice without the frills, where the punishment mirrors the crime. In the punk world, it screams back at the system: you screw us, we hit back harder. Fitting for Out of Order, Montreal's Oi! warriors who've been grinding since 2001, channeling that raw, working-class rage into anthems that kicks like a boot to the gut.
Lex Talionis, embodies the raw intensity of Oi! punk, drawing from the band's Montreal-based roots in street-level narratives and working-class defiance. Out of Order are greasing their streetpunk with Montreal grit and Halifax roots. If you're into the likes of Cock Sparrer or The Business, this'll feel like home, but with a Canadian edge that's colder than a Prairie winter.
The album blasts off with "Groomed by Rats" which explodes in your face—fuzzy riffs and vocals singing of personal struggles and the strength you need in this life. It's a perfect opener, short and savage, setting the tone for the chaos ahead. "Needle in the Park" has to be one of my favorites on this album, Maracle's snarl makes it feel personal. "Don't Back Down" is the album's heart-pumper, an Oi! anthem urging resilience with gang vocals and driving beats—echoing the band's ethos, which is navigating global crap without folding. "Facebreaker" lives up to its name, a brutal brawler for those face-to-face clashes. The other tracks are as good but hey, you need to have some suprise and listen for yourself, right?!
Look, Out of Order ain't chasing trends; they're veterans who've toured Europe in '25, hit Rebellion Fest, and shared stages with the greats. This record's a testament to their staying power, just honest Oi! that hits the disenfranchised where it hurts. If "Under the Knife" from a couple years back was their gritty comeback, Lex Talionis is the retaliation strike.
